Wedding Marquee Draping: The Details That Transform the Space

A marquee gives you something pretty special when it comes to wedding and event design. You’re essentially starting with a blank canvas and building the space from the ground up.

There’s framework, walls, ceiling structure and a whole lot of open space to work with. While that blank canvas is one of the best things about choosing a marquee, it can sometimes be hard to picture how you get from functional structure sitting on the lawn to the beautiful, layered space currently living on your Pinterest board.

Enter marquee draping.

Draping is one of the most transformative things you can do inside a marquee. It softens the structure, adds texture, changes how light moves through the space and can make the whole marquee feel designed from the inside out.

And there isn’t just one way to do it.

You can create a draped feature at one end of the marquee, introduce fabric through the ceiling and walls, or use draping to divide the marquee and create completely different zones within the same space.

So, if you love the look of marquee draping but have absolutely no idea what you’d actually ask for, this is for you.

What is marquee draping?

Marquee draping is fabric installed within the structure of your marquee to change how the interior looks, feels and, in some cases, functions.

It might be used draped across the ceiling or lining the walls, concentrated in one statement area, or installed as a divider within the marquee.

And while it obviously looks beautiful, marquee draping isn’t purely decorative. It can solve some very practical styling problems aswell.

Maybe your marquee feels a little too open for your guest numbers. Perhaps you want your dining and dancing areas to feel more defined, or there’s a particular part of the marquee that needs some softness. You might simply want to create a focal point that makes people go ohhh when they walk in.

That’s where draping becomes really clever.

Why does marquee draping make such a difference?

A marquee naturally has a lot of structure, and fabric completely changes the visual weight of it.

Introduce draping and suddenly you have softness, movement and texture. You can draw the eye upwards, create a more intimate feeling or turn the fabric itself into one of the biggest features of the design.

The way you style that fabric changes the mood too. Floor-to-ceiling gathered draping can feel full and dramatic, while softer flowing panels create something more relaxed and romantic. Knotted or tied fabric can give you a more editorial finish that photographs beautifully.

Then there’s colour. Light neutrals can keep everything feeling soft and airy, while darker or warmer tones can create a much moodier, more immersive space.

There isn’t one “right” way to do marquee draping. It’s about working out what makes sense for your marquee, your wider styling and the atmosphere you want to create.

Marquee Apex Draping

If you’re hiring one of our clear marquees, apex draping is one of our favourite ways to introduce softness and create a feature within the marquee.

We can install apex draping at either end of the marquee, which works beautifully when you want to create a focal point without draping the entire structure, and also can hide areas you’d rather not see when having a clear marquee wedding - think toilets or the catering marquee.

Clear marquees already give you a pretty spectacular backdrop, particularly when you’ve chosen your location because of the surrounding views. The trick isn’t necessarily covering all of that up. It’s knowing where adding fabric will make the biggest difference.

That’s where apex draping really comes into its own.

Creating Zones

Here’s where apex draping gets clever. It doesn’t have to sit at the end of the marquee.

We can also use apex draping within the marquee as a divider, which is such a good option when you want to create different zones within one larger space.

For example, you may want one part of the marquee to feel like your dining space while another area serves a different purpose later in the evening. Rather than everything being visible at once, draping can create some separation and make each area feel more intentional.

It can also help make a larger marquee feel more intimate.

This is where styling and logistics meet, which is very much our happy place. We’re always thinking about guest flow and comfort, not just how something looks in photos.

Where are guests moving? Where do you want them to naturally gather? What do you want them to see? Does the space feel too big for your guest numbers?

All of that matters when deciding where draping should go.

Wall Draping

Wall draping is all about softening the perimeter of the marquee and changing how the space feels from the inside.

It can help disguise the more functional elements of the structure, create a cleaner backdrop for your furniture and florals, and make the marquee feel more considered and enclosed.

Depending on the look you’re after, wall draping can be used throughout the whole marquee or focused on specific areas where you want more impact. Our wall draping can be used on walls in our Clear Marquees, and also in our Hampton Marquees as shown below. They may a great way to drape walls in a Hampton Marquee, or tied to the sides for a soft, luxe look.

This is especially effective if you want the interior styling to become the hero, rather than having the marquee structure visually compete with everything else happening in the space.

Ceiling Draping

Ceiling draping draws the eye upwards and adds softness, movement and texture overhead.

It can make a marquee feel more layered and finished, particularly when paired with beautiful lighting, pendants or florals.

Some ceiling draping styles feel soft and romantic, while others can be fuller and more dramatic depending on the amount of fabric, the way it is gathered and the overall creative direction.

It’s one of those details that can completely shift the mood of the marquee without needing to add more styling at ground level.

Custom Marquee Draping

If you want to take things up a level, custom marquee draping gives you more freedom with colour, fabric and overall finish.

Rather than working only with classic neutral tones, custom draping can be created in colours that tie more closely into your wedding or event palette. This could be used through the apex, ceiling or walls to create something much more immersive and design-led.

Think warm tonal draping for an evening event, deeper colours for something moodier, or a custom shade that connects beautifully with your florals, stationery and furniture.

This is where marquee draping starts to become a major part of the creative direction rather than simply a way of softening the structure.

What do you want your marquee to feel like?

Before you start worrying about exact draping configurations, think about the feeling you want to create.

Do you want the marquee to feel light and airy? Warm and intimate? Romantic and soft? Moody? Dramatic? Clean and editorial?

That answer gives us a much better starting point.

The colour of the fabric, how full it is, where it sits and how it’s styled all influence the atmosphere. A soft neutral drape inside a clear marquee during the day is going to feel very different from deeper, warmer fabric under evening lighting.

This is also where Pinterest is helpful, but only if we use it properly.

Instead of showing us one photo and saying, “I want this”, have a look at why you saved it.

Is it the colour? The fullness of the fabric? The way it falls? The lighting? The way the draping works with the tables underneath it?

Once we know what you actually love about the image, we can take that idea and work out how it translates into your own marquee.

Marquee draping doesn’t have to be white

Ivory and light neutral draping are classics for a reason. They soften a marquee beautifully, keep things feeling light and give you loads of flexibility with the rest of your styling.

But marquee draping absolutely does not have to be white.

Darker fabric can make a marquee feel richer and moodier, particularly for an evening event, while warm tonal colours can create a really beautiful, immersive feeling.

If you want the fabric itself to become part of the statement, colour can be a very good way to do it.

The trick is making sure we’re not choosing a draping colour in isolation. We need to consider your furniture, florals, tables, stationery and lighting too.

Everything doesn’t have to match, but it does need to feel like it was invited to the same wedding.

Marquee draping and lighting are very good friends

If you’re thinking about marquee draping, you also need to think about your lighting.

The two can completely change each other.

During the day, natural light coming through a clear marquee can make fabric feel soft and airy. Once the sun disappears, the lighting inside takes over and the exact same draping can suddenly feel warmer, richer and more dramatic.

Warm festoon lighting, pendants and other considered lighting choices can highlight the draping and bring the whole interior to life. Candles can add another beautiful layer at table level too, with their placement obviously needing to be carefully considered anywhere fabric is involved.

This is why we like thinking about the marquee as one complete space rather than making every styling decision separately.

The draping, lighting, florals and furniture should all be talking to each other.

Plan your layout before you finalise the draping

Your marquee isn’t going to be empty on the wedding day, so your draping shouldn’t be designed as though it will be.

There will be tables, chairs, bars, lounge furniture, a dance floor, florals, signage and, eventually, actual people in there.

If we’re creating a big draping feature at one end of the marquee, we want to know what’s going in front of it. Is it framing your head table? Is that where the dance floor sits? Could it create a beautiful background behind your bar?

If the draping is dividing your marquee, we need to know how guests are moving between those areas and how much room they actually need.

This is why layout and guest flow need to be part of the draping conversation from the beginning, rather than something we try to squeeze in afterwards.

Do you need to drape the entire marquee?

No.

And if there’s one thing we’d love you to take from this guide, it’s that marquee draping doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

If you love full wall and ceiling draping and it works with your creative direction, amazing. Go for it.

But if you’ve chosen a clear marquee because you love that open feeling and connection to the surroundings, covering every surface might defeat the purpose.

You could create an apex feature at one end, use draping to divide the space, add softness overhead or concentrate the fabric in one key area.

Sometimes restraint is actually what makes the draping stand out.

The goal isn’t to use the most fabric possible. It’s to use it where it will have the most impact.

Marquee draping can be practical too

As much as we love talking about how good marquee draping looks, it can also help the space function better.

Strategically placed draping can define different areas, make a large marquee feel more intimate and subtly guide guests through the space.

This is especially useful when one marquee needs to do several jobs throughout the day. Your dining area, bar and dance floor might all be under the same roof, but they don’t necessarily need to feel like one giant open room.

When we’re considering draping, we’re looking at what it can add visually and what it can do for the layout.

Pretty and practical. We want both.

How much marquee draping do you actually need?

There isn’t a magic formula here because every marquee and event is different.

The size and style of your marquee matter, but so do your guest numbers, layout, furniture, lighting, colour palette and overall creative direction.

So rather than immediately asking how many metres of fabric you need, we’d start with the bigger questions.

What part of the marquee needs the most impact? Do you want to keep the views through the clear walls? Does the space need to feel more intimate? Are we creating separate zones? What will guests see when they first arrive? How do you want the marquee to feel once the sun goes down?

Those answers tell us far more than a fabric measurement ever could.

Good marquee draping should solve something, enhance something or create something - preferably all three.

Bringing the whole marquee together

This is where marquee styling gets really fun.

Draping might be one of the biggest visual elements in the space, but it doesn’t exist on its own. The best marquee designs feel cohesive because the fabric, furniture, florals, signage, lighting and layout have all been considered together.

You might have beautiful soft draping overhead with more structured furniture underneath. Your florals might pick up the movement or colour of the fabric, while your lighting completely changes how that draping feels once evening arrives.

None of those elements need to compete for attention.

They just need to make sense together.

That’s the difference between putting a collection of beautiful things inside a marquee and actually designing the marquee from the inside out.
