Black Tie Event Styling for the Master Plumbers Awards in Blenheim
Some events are just a treat to be part of - and the Master Plumbers Awards was absolutely one of them.
After a long delay (thanks Covid), we finally got to venture to the sunny Marlborough region to bring together a truly stunning awards evening in Blenheim. And honestly? It was worth the wait.
Think black tie, crisp white florals, contemporary details, elegant table styling, and a room that felt polished, considered, and ready for a proper celebration.
For this event, we worked alongside the event planner team, who were based in Auckland, while the event itself was taking place in Blenheim, with is operating from Christchurch.
When you are planning an event from afar, especially one with a strong theme and a guest list that includes industry members, partners, families, supporters, and employees, you need more than pretty centrepieces. You need clear communication, trusted execution, thoughtful event styling, and a team who can take the creative direction and actually bring it to life on site.
The Brief: Black Tie, But Make It Welcoming
The brief for the Master Plumbers Awards was clear: create something impactful for a black tie theme, while still making the room feel warm, inviting, and suitable for the guest demographic.
Because here’s the thing about awards evenings: they need to feel elevated, but not intimidating. Polished, but not cold. Sophisticated, but still comfortable enough for guests to relax, connect, celebrate, and enjoy the night.
The event planner needed a styling concept that delivered on the black tie brief without making the space feel overly formal or too dramatic. The audience included Master Plumbers members, their partners and families, supporters, and employees - so the styling had to feel classy, contemporary, and impressive, while still being approachable given the members themselves.
You want them to feel spoiled and have a special night - but not intimidated.
So our job was to create a space that felt refined, modern, and memorable, while still supporting the flow and energy of the evening.
Our Role: Creative Direction, Hire, Florals, Setup and Packdown
For this event, we looked after the full event styling concept from start to finish.
That included the creative direction, table and centrepiece décor hire, florals, styling pieces, full setup, and packdown. Essentially, we took the visual and logistical styling pieces off the client’s plate so they could focus on the bigger picture of delivering the event.
And when you are an event planner managing an event, that kind of trusted support matters.
Instead of the planner having to coordinate multiple suppliers across regions, brief separate teams, chase details, and hope everything looked cohesive on the day, we handled the event styling elements under one clear direction.
One vision. One team. One less headache.
We worked with the client via Zoom and email, keeping the process simple, clear, and collaborative. With the event planner in Auckland, the event in Blenheim, and our team based in Christchurch, communication had to be smooth from the beginning.
And that is where good process earns its keep.
We made sure the concept, styling selections, florals, hire items, and installation details were all aligned before we arrived on site. No chaos. No confusion. No “wait, who was bringing the plinths?” energy.
Just a seamless experience, from planning through to packdown.
The Creative Direction: Sophisticated, Contemporary and Crisp
With a black tie theme, we wanted the styling to feel sleek and elevated without becoming too heavy.
Black tie event styling can easily tip into dark, dramatic, and moody, which can be beautiful - but for this event, we wanted to soften the overall feel and bring freshness into the room.
We created a contemporary look using a refined black and white palette, with crisp modern florals and considered styling details throughout the space.
White roses and hydrangeas brought structure, softness, and elegance to the tables, while gypsophila added a delicate layer that helped loosen the arrangements and keep them feeling airy.
The florals were styled on our black metal table plinths, creating height and impact without overwhelming the guest tables. This gave the room a sophisticated visual rhythm and helped the styling feel intentional from every angle.
Because great event styling is not about placing something pretty in the middle of a table and calling it a day. It is about scale, balance, movement, guest comfort, and how the whole room works together.
Centrepieces With Impact
For the table styling, we alternated between floral arrangements and tall chandeliers to add depth and variation across the room.
This approach created interest without making the layout feel busy. The florals brought softness and freshness, while the chandeliers added height, light, and a sense of occasion. The combination worked beautifully in the space.
It allowed each table to feel considered, while the room as a whole had a cohesive, elevated look. Guests had something beautiful to experience from the moment they walked in, but the styling still allowed conversation, comfort, and connection to take centre stage.
And for an event like this, guest flow and comfort are just as important as the visual impact.
Awards evenings have a lot happening - arrivals, seating, formalities, speeches, dinner service, awards presentations, networking, photos, and all the lovely in-between moments. The styling needs to support the function of the room, not fight against it.
Pretty, but practical. Always.
A Stage Moment Worth Looking At
The stage was another key focus for the event styling.
For the awards presentation, the stage needed to feel like a feature, not an afterthought. This is where guests would be looking throughout the night, where winners would be recognised, and where so much of the event’s energy would be centred.
So we created impact using towering black plinths with spectacular white florals.
The height of the plinths helped frame the stage and draw attention to the presentation area, while the florals added softness, elegance, and a sense of celebration. The result was bold, modern, and polished - a focal point that worked beautifully with the black tie theme.
Stage styling is one of those details that can completely transform an event. It sets the tone for the formalities, elevates photos, and gives the whole room a stronger sense of occasion.
And honestly? A good stage moment deserves her spotlight.
Why This Style Worked for the Guest Demographic
One of the most important parts of this brief was making sure the styling felt right for the people in the room.
The Master Plumbers Awards was not just a corporate event. It was a celebration for industry members, their partners and families, supporters, and employees. That meant the event styling needed to feel special and elevated, while still being accessible and enjoyable.
We wanted guests to walk in and feel impressed, but also comfortable. The kind of room where people feel proud to be there, excited to celebrate, and relaxed enough to enjoy the evening.
The black tie theme gave us a clear direction, but the softer white florals, thoughtful table styling, and elegant focal points helped create warmth and balance.
This is where an experienced event planner or event styling team can make such a difference. It is not just about choosing pieces that look good individually. It is about understanding the purpose of the event, who is attending, how the room will be used, and what the overall experience needs to feel like.
Because styling should never exist in a vacuum.
It needs to support the people, the programme, the venue, and the energy of the night.
Remote Planning Without the Stress Spiral
Planning an event across multiple locations can be a lot.
The event planner was based in Auckland. The event was in Blenheim. We are based in Christchurch. The moving parts were very much moving.
But this is exactly the kind of work we are known for across the South Island.
We regularly support events where clients, planners, venues, and suppliers are not all in the same place. Our job is to bring clarity to the process and make sure the creative direction is executed properly on the day.
For this event, Zoom and email gave us the tools to stay connected, but the real magic was in the preparation. We knew what needed to be designed, sourced, packed, transported, installed, styled, and packed down again.
And because we handled the styling, florals, décor hire, setup, and packdown, the client did not need to manage several separate styling suppliers or worry about whether the finished room would feel cohesive.
We had it covered.
That is the beauty of working with a team who can manage both the hard stuff and the pretty stuff.
The Finished Look
The final result was elegant, contemporary, and beautifully suited to the black tie brief.
From the sleek black cutlery to the crisp white florals, black metal plinths, chandeliers, and statement stage florals, every element worked together to create a polished and memorable awards evening.
The room felt classy without being stuffy. Sophisticated without feeling overdone. Impactful without losing warmth.
Exactly what we hoped to create.
And the kind words from the client made it even better -
“We’re thrilled with how everything looked so thank you so much for all your hard work! The room looked gorgeous and very classy which was just what we hoped for. The flowers were beautiful and worked in so well with our theme, so thank you very much for everything.”

Two Ways We Can Help Bring Your Event to Life
Not every event needs the same level of styling support, and honestly, it shouldn’t.
Some celebrations call for a full creative direction, a cohesive styling document, carefully considered guest flow, and a team who can take your ideas and turn them into something seamless, elevated, and very much not cookie-cutter.
Others need something simpler, smarter, and more cost-effective, especially when you’re planning a smaller corporate event, team celebration, client function, or intimate gathering where full styling design and on-site services aren’t required.
That’s why we offer two different approaches.
1. Tailored Event Styling & Design
For businesses wanting a more bespoke approach, we can tailor the styling to suit your specific event, guests, goals, venue and budget.
This is where we look at the bigger picture: how you want the event to feel, how guests will move through the space, what moments need impact, and how to make everything feel cohesive from start to finish.
We’ll help bring the creative direction together with styling ideas that are intentional, practical, and aligned with your brand or celebration. Think of it as your Pinterest board, but with actual follow-through, and without you needing to spend your lunch break comparing centerpiece options.
2. Our Event Guide
For businesses planning smaller celebrations or working with a more streamlined budget, our Event Guide is the perfect place to start.
It includes pre-determined centrepiece options designed to make event planning easier, clearer and more cost-effective. This option is ideal for event planners, workplaces, and teams who still want a beautiful, considered look, without needing full styling design or additional styling services.
You’ll have simple, polished options to choose from, making it easy to create a styled feel without the overwhelm, guesswork, or endless back-and-forth.
Whether you need a fully tailored event concept or a straightforward styling solution that still feels elevated, we’ve got options to suit the scale, budget and level of support you need.
Because your event should look good, feel good, and run smoothly. No chaos required.
